Back-to-School Starts Now: Simple Ways to Help Your Child Get Ready for a Great School Year

The fireworks have faded, the flags are being folded away, and summer is beginning to wind down. While there are still plenty of sunny days left to enjoy, now is the perfect time to start preparing your child for a successful school year.

Whether your child is entering kindergarten or getting ready for middle school, a little preparation in July and early August can make the first weeks of school much less stressful. The best part? Getting ready doesn't have to feel like schoolwork. A balance of fun, healthy habits, and a little academic practice can help your child walk into the classroom feeling confident.

Here are four areas to focus on this month.

🎉 Fun: Keep Learning Enjoyable

Children learn best when they're having fun. Before school begins, look for activities that naturally build reading, math, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Some ideas include:

  • Visit your local library and let your child choose books they're excited to read.

  • Play educational board games such as Boggle (great for older elementary and middle school students), Betcha Can't Win, or Burst to strengthen vocabulary and math skills.

  • Visit museums, parks, zoos, or nature centers and encourage your child to ask questions about what they see.

  • Cook together by reading recipes, measuring ingredients, and practicing fractions.

  • Keep a simple summer journal where your child writes or draws something about each week.

  • Let your child help plan a family outing by reading maps, comparing prices, or creating a schedule.

Remember, learning doesn't always happen at a desk. Everyday experiences build important life skills.

❤️ Health: Build Healthy Habits Before School Starts

A successful school year begins with a healthy body and mind. Many families find that summer schedules are more relaxed, but now is a great time to begin transitioning back to school routines.

Try these healthy habits:

  • Begin moving bedtime and wake-up time closer to the school schedule.

  • Encourage at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day.

  • Limit excessive screen time and replace some of it with reading or family games.

  • Schedule back-to-school physicals, dental appointments, and vision exams if needed.

  • Eat healthy meals together whenever possible.

  • Practice packing a healthy lunch or choosing nutritious snacks.

These small adjustments make the first week of school much easier for everyone.

📚 Next Grade Readiness: Keep Skills Fresh

One of the biggest challenges teachers see every fall is the "summer slide." Spending just 15–20 minutes a day reviewing skills can help your child start the year with confidence.

Kindergarten

  • Practice recognizing letters and their sounds.

  • Count to 20 and beyond.

  • Practice writing their name.

  • Read together every day.

  • Practice following one- and two-step directions.

Grades 1–2

  • Read aloud daily.

  • Practice sight words.

  • Review addition and subtraction facts.

  • Write a few sentences about your favorite summer activities.

  • Count money and tell time.

Grades 3–5

  • Read chapter books independently.

  • Practice multiplication and division facts.

  • Review fractions and decimals.

  • Write short paragraphs with complete sentences.

  • Practice spelling and vocabulary.

Grades 6–8

  • Read books from different genres.

  • Review multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, and percentages.

  • Practice solving multi-step math problems.

  • Write short responses explaining ideas with evidence.

  • Build vocabulary using prefixes, suffixes, and root words.

  • Organize school supplies and begin using a planner or calendar.

Even a few minutes of review each day can make a noticeable difference when school begins.

✏️ If Needed: Don't Wait to Get Extra Help

Sometimes parents notice their child struggled during the previous school year or ended the year feeling frustrated with reading, writing, or math. Rather than waiting until the first report card arrives, consider giving them a boost before school starts.

Early intervention helps students:

  • Build confidence.

  • Review forgotten skills.

  • Fill learning gaps.

  • Develop better study habits.

  • Begin the school year feeling prepared instead of overwhelmed.

At Cindy's Tutoring Services, I work with students in Kindergarten through 8th grade in reading, writing, and math. Every lesson is personalized to meet each student's individual needs because every child learns differently. Whether your child needs to catch up, stay on track, or be challenged, a few tutoring sessions before school starts can help them begin the year with confidence.

A Fresh Start

Back-to-school preparation doesn't have to be stressful. By focusing on fun experiences, healthy routines, and a little academic review, you're giving your child the tools they need for a successful year.

Every child can learn. Sometimes they need the right support, encouragement, and opportunities to grow.

Here's to a school year filled with curiosity, confidence, and success!
